A Word of Advice

Take your best fitting pair of jeans and measure them using the methods outlined below, and compare them to our size charts. This is how to nail the perfect fitting pair of jeans. We believe the perfect fit has two fingers-width of space in the waistband and are fitted but not skin tight on the hips, thighs, or anywhere else.

The most common issue people run into when ordering jeans online is buying them too small. If you are between sizes, we recommend going with the larger size.

We recommend you do not size down in anticipation that the denim will stretch over time unless you are a seasoned denimhead and are familiar with the specific qualities of the denim you are buying.

We cut our selvage jeans to sit on the hip while giving you a little extra room in the waistband for a little more comfort and mobility. This makes the hip measurement one of the most important.

Waist Measure:

Lay the jeans on a flat surface. Flatten the waistband by pressing out any wrinkles or kinks with your hands. Pull the front waistband up parallel with the back waistband and measure across the top from edge to edge.

This is a flat measurement and it will give you half of the total waist measurement. A full waist measurement is double the flat measurement. For example, 16 inches x 2 = 32 inches.

Please note, there is a difference between the tag size of jeans and actual waist measurements. A size 32 does not have a waist measurement of 32”. This is standard in American sizing and why size charts are so essential.

Measuring your selvedge denim jeans

Hip:

This is a crucial measurement. The hips determine how tight your jeans feel.

Flatten down the hips so no wrinkles or kinks remain. Pull out any slack from the back as well.

The first step is to find the hip level. For this, you measure along the outseam of the jeans. Start at the bottom of the waistband and measure 6” down the outseam. This is where you will take the hip measurement.

To measure the hip, start at the outer edge of the jeans and measure at a slight downward angle just below the J stitch and then across the opposite side, going up at the same slight angle. A picture is worth a thousand words, so here it is.

Thigh:

Measure one inch down the inseam from the midpoint between the double needle stitch of the front rise. Mark with your finger or light colored pencil.

Measure across at a slightly upward angle following the natural pitch of the thigh panel.

Knee:

To find the knee level, measure 13” inches down the inseam, from the midpoint of the double needle stitch of the front rise. Pull the fabric flat so there is no slack and measure across the leg from edge to edge.

Inseam:

Measure from the midpoint of the double needle stich on the front rise. Walk the tape measure down the contour of the inseam in small sections, making sure the tape measure doesn’t slide up or down along the stitch. Measure to the edge of the hem.
